To ensure optimal nutrition, a child athlete's diet should include the following seven key elements:


1. Adequate Calories for proper growth and to fuel performance.

2. Protein to promote muscle growth and repair.

3. Carbohydrates for energy needed during physical activity.

4. Healthy Fats for fat-soluble vitamins and additional calorie needs.

5. Vitamins and Minerals to support overall health, including brain and bone development.

6. Water and Fluids to maintain hydration during exercise and recovery.

7. Fiber for healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.

Many young athletes may not get all the necessary nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, fiber, and potassium. Poor eating habits such as skipping breakfast, snacking on nutrient-poor foods, or restrictive dieting can limit nutrient intake and hinder athletic performance.
